The count of rigs drilling for oil and gas in the US was down 14 this week to 1768, according to the latest data from Houston service firm Baker Hughes.
Units drilling for oil decreased by 16 for a total of 1395, but still 55 units higher than a year ago.
The count drilling for gas added by three, however, to 372. The tally was still down 57 from a year ago.
Offshore, the Gulf of Mexico gained a pair of rigs for a total of 59, up 11 from a year ago.
Colorado shed the most rigs for the week, its count dropping by six to a total of 64. The count for the DJ-Niobrara basin dropped by three.
Texas and Wyoming dropped three rigs each for totals of 845 and 53 respectively.
Amid rising natural gas prices, counts in the gas-rich Haynesville and Marcellus plays were up by two and three for counts of 42 and 88 respectively.
Alaska shed two rigs for a total of seven while California and North Dakota saw their counts drop by one for totals of 35 and 173 respectively.
West Virginia added two rigs for a total of 36 while Pennsylvania added one for a total of 55.
